BIRTH CERTIFICATES: The translation of a birth certificate is usually required for by immigration officials. In the USA, Green Card applicants
are asked
submit a birth certificate with their request, which must be translated and certified. Certified, translated documents are also required by Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly Immigration and Naturalization Service – INS). If a birth certificate is not in English, it must be translated into English
and its translation certified before it will be accepted by immigration authorities in the US. (Canada has similar requirements.)
MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES: As a legal document confirming the marriage between two individuals a marriage certificate (sometimes referred to in
foreign
jurisdictions as a marriage license, wedding certificate, wedding license, certificate of matrimony, etc.) may be required for immigration applications. In the
US, individuals applying for a Green Card (i.e. a permanent resident visa), Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly Immigration and
Naturalization Service – INS) requires the submission of certified translation of your marriage certificate. Marriage certificates may also be required when
opening a joint bank account with a spouse and in life insurance claims. In divorce proceedings, a marriage certificate issued in a foreign language (i.e.
other than English) will have to be submitted to the courts with jurisdiction along with an official (certified) translation. Moreover, the translation may need
to be notarized (or accompanied by a sworn affidavit by a translator with the appropriate credentials).
DIVORCE CERTIFICATES: As a legal document confirming the divorce between two individuals a divorce certificate (sometimes referred to in foreign jurisdictions as a divorce decree, certificate of dissolution of marriage, divorce papers, etc.) may be required for immigration applications when a foreign citizen who has previously been married is marrying an american. In the US, individuals may be asked for a certified translated copy of their divorce papers by Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, formerly Immigration and Naturalization Service – INS), the US Passport Agency, and other agencies
requiring proof of matrimonial status.
